A dhow at sunset off Zanzibar

Encounter

Zanzibar

August 2026 · 12 women

The story

Twelve women, eight days and an island that moves to its own rhythm. We wandered the carved doorways and spice stalls of Stone Town, sailed a dhow out at sunset and spent a morning with the women who farm seaweed along the east coast.

Evenings belonged to the rooftops and long dinners by the water. By the last night, a group that had arrived as strangers was already planning its next Encounter together.

“I came on my own and left with eleven sisters. Nothing about Zanzibar felt like a tour; it felt like being let in.”
Layla, Encounter Zanzibar
